IS ELECTRO-SENSITIVITY A BLACK SWAN?
The Black Swan theory refers to a large-impact, hard-to-predict, and rare event beyond the realm of normal expectations.
See Nassim Nicholas Taleb
It also has large consequences.
If the world’s favourite means of distributing energy has serious health implications, which those familiar with biological
mechanisms linking low level electromagnetic radiation with bad health reactions increasingly find, we have large consequences
alright.
HELP FOR EHSsers
As few doctors and others have training or experience of dealing with the difficulties raised by being extra-sensitive to
electromagnetic forces we have set up this voluntary organisation and website. And we try to make it not too sombre and doomy.
We offer a free service giving help and support at 01353775329 preferably in office hours during the morning.
Or for
a quick taped summary to help you anytime day or night ring 09040 841402, this is premium rate £1.00 a minute, you must be
over 18 with permission, it will cost you the price of a couple of coffees. Speak or listen to the guy called "The ElectroSphere
Guru" on myspace. Ha!
This is a job of work for which we need necessary resources, somewhere along the line. We are not a charity with funds behind
us. We stand on our own two feet having been financed to set up as volunteers by donations from those helped in the past.
These are mainly serious EHS sufferers and those scientifically anxious over the treatment/denial of this issue.
Initially I, Rod, shall try to reply personally to requests,I have been doing that over the last five years.
It is difficult conveniently to serve, in large numbers, those without the ability to use electronic communications. But they
can be the most severe cases! So if someone e-mails me at es-support@hotmail.com details on their behalf, or they write in
to ESS Office, Bury Lane,
Sutton, Ely, Cambs CB6 2BB, I will do what I can by snail mail.
The support we offer is firstly the definite reassurance you are not nutty or deluded, as some felt in the isolation of the
early days in puzzlement and confusion. Along with that, we have assembled from other's often bitter experience with EHS,
some valued practical
suggestions and palliative measures, tips too. The shocking reality, and one quite properly difficult to accept for many,
is that there is no cure or magic bullet, or uniquely often even sympathy or attempts to understand and help.
This
ES condition is
an ongoing reaction to the still worsening saturated electromagnetic environment many of us inhabit, as far as some sensitive
humans*, and animals especially birds*, are concerned. No one wants to step up and acknowledge responsibility, it is easier
for all to 'Carry on Denying'. Some one should make a black comedy film of it, because not many are laughing.
Some sensitives do definitely improve their situation thank
goodness, its not all doom and gloom

More on brain effects of EMR
#931: ANOTHER NEUROSURGEON LINKS MOBILE PHONE USE WITH BRAIN TUMOURS August 2008, Go to TODAYonline Radiation: Just how bad is it for us?? Doctor links mobile phone use to malignant tumours here, but other experts disagree
as always.
Tan Hui Leng huileng@mediacorp.com.sg WELL-KNOWN neurosurgeon Keith Goh has seen an increase in the
number of cases of malignant brain tumours and this is worrying him — especially as more and more are young adults, even children. And
his view on why this is happening goes to the heart of a long-raging controversy to which there are still no conclusive answers,
and which divides fellow experts in Singapore:
The effects of mobile phone radiation. “It takes a few years
for the tumours to develop, but there seems to be a good amount of evidence that the radiation that comes from the mobile
phone contributes toward the development of brain tumours. “I think we are at this stage in time just seeing the tip of
the iceberg,” said Dr Goh, best known to the public for his role in operations to separate conjoined twins: Nepalese
pair Ganga and Jamuna Shrestha in 2001, and in 2003, Iranians Ladan and Laleh Bijani as well as a pair of Korean twins. Since
he began practicing neurosurgery in the 1990s, brain tumour cases were mainly in those 50 years and above. Today, he is seeing
more adults in their 20s to their mid-40s, among both his local and foreign patients. In the last four months alone, Dr Goh
has seen 12 new cases — the youngest aged two and four. And this is not because detection has improved, he says. If it
was, “we would be seeing more patients with small tumours but these are large tumours”. He estimates that a decade
ago, 30 per cent of brain tumours would be malignant; now, it’s 50 per cent. Dr Goh is not the only expert who is concerned.
Last month, the director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, Dr Ronald Herberman, urged staff to keep phones
always from their heads and to let children use them only in emergencies. In a memo, he said:“We shouldn’t wait for
a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry.”

Dr Carlo's Survey Feedback Conference 07/09/08 & more
ESS News Update Dr Carlo's Survey Feedback Conference 07/09/08 This meeting was a preliminary to the Scientific
Conference on the 8th and 9th at the Royal Institution organised by 'The Radiation Research Trust' for a real examination
of this topical and gravely disturbing growing health problem. They paid for Dr Carlo to come over and we are all grateful
for that. ES sufferers would have great difficulty attending such an EMF city centre hotspot, so the Sunday meet was in a
low EMF Friary. Dr George O Carlo needs no introduction for many informed electrosensitives moving up the essential'Learning
Curve' on this controversial EHS issue. He was boss of the original $25 million dollar US research effort into potential health
risks from microwave technology which was shelved and the conclusions are still denied. The level of risk would have
stunted the development of the technology and hence the entire industry. As a medical researcher, George, (well we
are on first name terms), is producing clinical evidence of the biological mechanisms in your body resulting from
electromagnetic fields. Especially from information carrying radiowaves, ICRs, though it is the totality of all electromagneic
exposure that stresses and counts too. This is if you like 'the missing link' sought after as explaining the configuration
of health effects reported by extra-sensitive individuals in the UK Survey of some hundreds of those reporting health
symptoms. These they all link to accumulated EMF/MW exposure. And damnably misery-making they are, with no known cure. This
is a preliminary report by me as a participant hotly returned from Aylesford Priory, the low-level electrosmog venue selected.
All errors are mine, official reports will come out soon. An assessment of the total exposure we all now receive indicates
we are approaching environmental saturation, pushing up against the globally permitted maximum of 1.6 W/kg a level which
might heat your body and is thus recognised as a health threat. The latest Iphone we learned employs new technology for passing
on massive amounts of information by bypassing the need for direct-to-mast transmissions in favour of sending signals on
to the nearest available Iphone in somebody else's pocket en route to the closest mast. Whether your phone is switched on
or not you are receiving and sending signals. Rather worrying no? In the USA a 'Health Concern' website set up for
self reported feedback recorded 30,000 contacts on electrical sensitivity. Here the charity ES-UK had actively sought
out e-sensitives and assembled the first congregated data base which could be used to question further. We now know: A)There
are more women than men affected, B) It tends to be older people, they often have a previous record of environmental
sensitivities. C) It is chronic - an ongoing functional disability, worsening usually over time and broadening into
other stimuli. D) It is very difficult to achieve an official GP diagnosis E) Some triggering event is necessary,
then it hits the vulnerable, we cannot know who they are as yet, or what threshold any individual has. There are all manner
of triggers which shock and stress the bodily systems from lightning strikes to electrical shocks, car accidents, bacterial
and viral infections, chemical exposures and influences, traumatic stressing life events, grief etc. F)All manner of
different triggers can precipitate an individual over their threshold. Then the accumulated overload within people overstresses
and prevents normal functioning, at a cellular level, particularly compromising inter-cellular communication and the immune
system. This is caused through what is now termed MEMBRANE SENSITIVITY SYNDROME, MSSOther conditions
like Parkinson's, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Alzheimer's, Autism, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, MCS, and more are the consequences,
even alcoholism comes under this umbrella. Electro-sensitivity is one sub-type among several. HOW DOES
IT WORK?Oh very simply ho ho. By Epigenetic Vertical Cellular Transmission and ion channel im/permeability
varying with spatially coherent and temporally coherent unnatural Information Carrying Radiowaves, ICRWs, affecting external
scilla (scylla?) and thus the molecular structure of cell membranes, increasing parasympathetic responses at the cost of the
sympathetic. mode. HO yeah. Simple, you all get sick and we can all go home! Hooray! OK OK, while waiting for
the man himself to explain again in longhand with diagrams in the future, I shall attempt the challenge of everyday linguistic
deconstruction of this scientific verbosity, based on my illegible note-taking. 1) First its 'A' level biology,
which I never took. We are all assemblages of specific and different microscopic living cells, with interstitial fluid in
the spaces around them congregating into organisms. (That word congregate again, it must be all the hymn singing and Sunday
chanting from the religious backdrop). Collections of organs make up organisms ie you and me. So efficient cell operations
and communications are fundamental and vital to our inner processes, breathing heartbeat, sweating, thinking and acting in
a coherent and organised fashion. Actually being coherent and sysematically organised, we are complex organisms, both automatic
and controlled. 2) Cells are surrounded by membranes, not really a balloon type skin, but more (according to Bill Bryson)
the consistency of light machine oil at the tiny forces represented at this sub-molecular level. Oil that is only two or
three molecules thick, these stretch apart to allow the passage of information and nutrition as chemicals or ions to
enter the cell or close up to ‘wall in’ and secure the barriers to the outside when in parasympathetic mode. Or is it vice
versa? When in sympathetic mode? Either way here is a cute dramatisation of the process at an organs level, not cellular. See Organ level modesWhen normally functioning, ie when you are alive and not ill, and in a natural electromagnetic environment (low level,
no microwaves), the cells switch from mode to mode, ie communicating or shutting up shop all the time, and rapidly. When exposed
to radiofrequency information carrying radiowaves they pick them up as intruder danger, are sensitive to their passing by,
and then shut up shop. They refuse to join in and party, pass on no information or eject waste products and sullen and sulky
can die, necrotic cell death, ugh. Without electrosmog pollution, the natural electromagnetic environment of our planet
is benign for us. Of course it is, we evolved in tune with it, indeed out of it, so are part of it, functioning in accord
by tuning in with some of its messages as do the birds and the bees. To our receptive cells it is either spatially coherent
(in 3 dimensions) or temporally coherent (reliable and predictable over time) and known to our cells. The artificial messages
now widespread act something like ship to ship flag information communications (my metaphor, not George’s), they are both
spatially and temporally coherent together, Herz level signals carried on a harmless Gigaherz carrier wave. The cells are
confused by receiving this illegible or undecipherable load of gobbledygook, so shut down temporarily as a default measure
for safety’s sake. Trouble can arise when they try to switch on again and the emissions are still present, so shut down again,
and in ever larger numbers so affecting organ functioning and particularly the autonomic immune system which tries to keep
us all healthy and balanced. Cells fill with waste (often heavy metals) get no nutrition, lose energy as their mitochondria
is affected, and can fail to restart. You feel rough, get worse and find understanding help very hard to get until
more doctors are trained in these effects as Dr Carlo is putting in train. As this body of clinical information corresponding
to known medical facts and normal science is disseminated he is assembling various criteria and levels of symptoms and severity
for diagnosis, based on this survey and other research. Importantly, objective laboratory tests using urine and blood which
establish the ES condition into medical knowledge are being conducted. Treatments are being formulated involving exclusive
adherence to therapeutic interventions in a clean electromagnetic environment. These involve various procedures in sequence
to stimulate proper cell functioning again (which reduces unpleasant ES symptoms), to clean out waste like toxic heavy metals
such as lead and mercury from the cells and also interstitial (between cells) fluid, remove free radicals, and re-energise
the mitochondria based internal cell energy levels. This takes weeks and months, varying for different stages. Now
I must lay down with a cold we towel wrapped around my head. Please inform me anyone what I have plain wrong, distorted
or misunderstood, or missed out. Cheers Rod ESS at www.electrosensitivity-support.com

Electromagnetic Phenomena and Health - A Continuing Controversy?
http://www.iop.org/Conferences/Forthcoming_Institute_Conferences/EPH_08/event_30448.html
10 Sep 2008
London, United Kingdom
There are a wide variety of often highly controversial scientific opinions on whether low-level static and time-varying electromagnetic
fields (as encountered in many everyday environments), may create beneficial and/or detrimental health effects in humans.
Some high-profile scientists and policy-makers stress a general need for more rigorous guidelines based on their own and others'
research, whilst other highly-respected authorities dismiss the general need for such options, after examining stringently
existing peer-reviewed scientific research and noting a lack of consistent findings between many studies.
This one-day conference, with international speakers, examines both sides of the debate whilst highlighting particular 'best-practice'
'precautionary principle' measures, and the possible need for further research and/or precaution with regard to some proposed/existing
"enhanced electromagnetic hygiene" measures (some of which it will be suggested may actually prove detrimental to health).

IS WI-FI PUTTING OUR CHILDREN IN DANGER?
by Tessa Thompson
Adults may be safe, but what are the effects on youngsters exposed to radiation?
WITH wireless internet and mobile phones now in constant use in our schools and homes, TESSA THOMAS asks if youngsters are
being exposed to hazardously high levels of radiation.
When Leah Homan is anywhere near a phone mast, her body alerts her – even before the mast comes into view.
“I get a sort of tingling and dizziness and sometimes a headache and then I know there’s one not far away.”
Leah, 12, is sensitive to the radiation from masts and other mobile telecommunications equipment. When she was two, a tumour
was found around one of her kidneys. Fortunately it was discovered in time and removed.
Her mother Jackie feared that a phone mast close to their home in Sefton, Liverpool, may have been to blame, although this
cannot be proven.
Even though Leah made a full recovery, as a toddler she was restless and later had difficulty sleeping and concentrating at
primary school, where she needed extra help to compensate for her attention problems.
She still suffers intermittent insomnia, brain fog, headaches and the familiar tingling, which is worse when she’s near a
computer and the wireless router is on.
In a world where most people are now close to a mobile mast or wi-fi network and live normal lives, such a reaction seems
surprising. But more children are becoming sensitive to electromagnetic emissions from telecoms equipment.
And the number is set to increase inexorably, says pathologist Dr George Carlo of the Science and Public Policy Institute
in Washington, who spoke at a recent Radiation Research Trust conference.
Information carrying radio waves are everywhere – from wireless computers, cordless phones, mobile phones and masts. At least
half of all primary schools and three-quarters of secondary schools in the UK now have wi-fi.
According to Dr Carlo, mobile telecommunications were launched without enough research to assess the risks to health and with
little awareness of the extent to which children would be using the technology.
There are guidelines for safe exposure to emissions, implemented in the UK through the Health Protection Agency (HPA), but
there are several problems. First, they take into account only the risk of damage caused by the body being heated up by the
emissions. By contrast, the effects may be deep inside the tissue and cannot be felt.
Second, their upper “safe” limit is considerably higher than that in several other countries – 10 times as high as
in Russia.
Also, the limits were based on the effect on a healthy adult of a half-hour exposure. Children not only spend much longer
than anyone anticipated in front of laptops or with a mobile glued to their ear but have a different biological make-up that
makes them more vulnerable.
“They have thinner skulls so the radio waves can penetrate more readily,” explains Dr Carlo. “A greater percentage
of their bodies are water and they have a higher proportion of ions in their interstitial fluids, both of which increase absorption
of radio waves. Also, their cells are dividing, making them more vulnerable to genetic damage.”
Symptoms include fatigue, sleep problems, tingling, neck pain, dizziness, headaches and nausea. Sceptics say there is no proof
and these complaints could have many causes.
One study, reported in the British Medical Journal in 2006, concluded that electromagnetic sensitivity could be psychological.
James Rubin and his team at the Institute of Psychiatry found that when people who said they were sensitive to radio waves
were tested with real or sham waves, they were as likely to say that the dummy waves caused a headache.
It doesn’t mean that their headaches were any less real but it did mean that they weren’t directly connected with the assumed
cause,” says Rubin.
However, it is worth noting that the study was partly funded by mobile phone companies. A lot of the other symptoms of electromagnetic
sensitivity – digestive problems, depression, memory loss – have a compound effect. This means that the longer the exposure
goes on, the worse the problems are likely to get. “No one has any idea what chronic long-term exposure will do to children,”
says Dr Carlo.
Some schools have decided against taking any risk and removed their wireless networks. The head of Ballinderry Primary School
in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, Ian Thomson, announced recently that “the advantages of wi-fi seemed to be outweighed by
the risks”, so he discontinued it.
What is worrying, says Dr Michael Kundi, head of environmental health at Vienna University, is that while children are more
vulnerable than adults, there is no official threshold for emissions indoors – which is where youngsters are most often in
the line of fire.
“Wi-fi may be limited in its power but that doesn’t mean it is safe for children. We have no evidence of that yet,”
he says, adding that there are ways to configure networks in the classroom to limit emissions but few teachers know about
them.
Although other countries – including Israel and Italy – are adopting lower exposure limits, the HPA says there is still insufficient
evidence to issue separate guidelines for children.
End
We replied with this letter, will it be published? To Daily Express
Dear Sir/madam,
"Is wi-fi putting our children in danger" asks Tessa Thomas (Sept 16), and is scrupulously even handed in including comments
from both sides of the lack of scientific consensus, for and against whether these dangers exist. She might be less studiously
neutral if, like me, she had spoken and listened to over 500 electromagnetically extra sensitive people as manager of a leading
charity in this field for five years (ElectroSensitivity-UK, 1103018) and now running an ES support group.
Children cannot hope to get a hearing for their complaints of symptoms like 'brain fog' and confusion which, yes, can have
other causes, when adults cannot. Even adults like Brian Stein Chief Executive of a £450 million pa turnover company, or Michael
Bevington head of classics at Stowe School, or Sarah Dacre formerly with her own video company, all now trustees of the aforesaid
charity.
We call this the 'politically incorrect' or 'unacceptable sickness' as no one wants to talk about the totality of electromagnetic
radiation exposure over years, which accumulates as a serious disabling 'allergy' type ES reaction to an electropolluted environment.
A reaction to which no-one knows their personal threshold or tipping point. We all vary as do children.
Turn up at your GP's surgery and you may well receive the strange looks reserved for "Here's a right one, thinks computers
make her ill", it is more women than men, and thank goodness mostly older ones, but children are now popping up in our
case loads, desperate for understanding support.
They tell us they are ill, and when and why, not us them.
Sir William Stewart head of the Health Protection Agency called for a review of wi-fi health effects on Panorama last year
to a resounding, indeed deafening, silence.
Sincerely

Some News 23.09.08 is presented like this:
Professor Colin Blakemore Is The New President Of
The Motor Neurone Disease Association
One of the UK’s most influential and respected scientists has been
appointed by the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association as its new President. Renowned British neuroscientist, Professor
Colin Blakemore, will use his role to help change the face of UK MND research whilst campaigning for the highest standards
of care to be available to everyone affected by this cruel disease.
Well you can take us donkeys to water, but
we ain't drinking this!
This must be some new meaning of the word 'respected' that I've not met before says a leading
physicist, going on to give us more insight into why:
"God help MND sufferers and, more significantly, those
who may suffer from MND in the future, quite possibly due to misinformation perpetrated by friend Blakemore. He is fond of
telling us that the calcium efflux effect documented in the Stewart Report is questionable, that concerns about this effect
are based on "some studies back in the Seventies" and that "these studies have not been duplicated in subsequent work".
In
fact only TWO of the SEVEN studies demonstrating this effect were from the Seventies, FOUR were from the Eighties and one
was in 1996. The only other attempted replication as documented in the follow-up NRPB Report on Tetra was ANOTHER succesful
replication in 1999. Set these eight against four unsuccessful replications in the Eighties - three of those led by the
same US military officer (NRPB/HPA-RPD have always been fond of 'balance of evidence' arguments - but not in this case. I
wonder why??).
I know of no attempted replications since 1999 - the work by Tattersall at DSTL Porton Down for the
Home Office a few years ago was on a DIFFERENT effect (often mirepresented as an attempted replication) - and its methods
and findings are both open to serious question.
Given that calcium imbalance in brain cells is strongly associated
with MND in a number of studies, and given the massively significant incidence of MND around at least one long-standing Tetra
mast - see Starweave
One could be forgiven for thinking this guy is NOT the right man for the job !!

THE ECONOMIST has published an article about the controversy over some health impacts at
The Economist
We replied with the following:
As the manager, and a founder, of charity ElectroSensitivity-UK 1103018, and
now running www.electrosensitivity-support.com, I speak and listen to electrosensitives on a daily basis. About 500 registered
with us. So many that I now claim to know more ES sufferers personal experience than anyone else in the UK. Recently I was
christened on Myspace 'the ESGuru', one who is back with a new website www.electrosensitivity-support.com .
So much
for boasting of experience, why bother to?
Simply because far too much conversation around this ES issue is reductive,
and thus is "a misrepresentation of a complex concept by reducing it to overly limited terms" as one dictionary has it. Almost
all e-sensitives have had a difficult time extracting what is really happening to their health over time from everyday experience,
the 'undifferentiated manifold', or as Germaine Greer refers to it from Kant:
"Most reasonably educated Guardian
readers would, I faintly hope, have recognised the phrase "unsynthesised manifold" as an English version of a basic
concept in Immanuel Kant's Critique of Judgment, first published in English in 1790... The expression endures because in more
than 200 years no one has found a better way of rendering the idea, although its content continues to evolve with changes
in our understanding of brain function and the mechanics of perception. The "unsynthesised manifold" is, in the original sense,
everything that is out there, regardless of whether we perceive it or not. As we can't sensibly talk about matters of which
we are unaware, we can use the expression more usefully to describe the endless flood of undifferentiated sensory data we
accumulate throughout our waking hours. Our conscious and subconscious attempts at organising this stuff and getting it to
make a kind of sense are attempts at synthesis. Because of the way the brain routinely edits and translates the raw data,
what we perceive is not reality itself but a model of reality as encoded by our individual software, even before we start
trying consciously to make sense of it. Most of what we perceive evades conceptualisation...".
It is hard work
for the EHS beginner to defy the authoritative denials of many doctors without training on radiation effects backed up by
some out of date physicists with little understanding of biological mechanisms, but great access to the media. As Alan
McCrindle writes below, it would be naive to expect anything else but scientific controversy when this massive industry is
exploiting such an enormous goldmine. Look at the PR revelations with tobacco and Hollywood only coming out into the light
of public knowledge today. These hundreds of complex often intelligent competent rational people with electrosensitivity are
not nematode worms or lab rats, (though they show biological effects from this radiation too) but responsive articulate human
beings, compos mentis, not deluded, as arrogant psychologists and commentators talk down to them. Yes there are
psychological components, there are to any serious sickening reaction, but these are basically fine and healthy people who
happen to be a little more sensitive than the average to the totality of electrosmog from ALL sources overloading their bodies
ability to process and deal with it.

Pylons 'double risk of dying from dementia'
LIVING close to pylons and high-voltage cables doubles the risk of dying from Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia,
a study claims.
Researchers say they have found a direct link between the electromagnetic fields created by power lines and all types of
dementia. The study by doctors at Bern University's Institute of Social and Preventative Medicine in Switzerland is the latest
evidence pointing to the dangers posed by power lines.
An estimated 150,000 Britons live within the 165ft danger zone of electricity pylons, according to Professor Denis Henshaw,
an expert on human radiation. And last night the University of Bristol scientist said: "It is now time that electricity
pylons are pulled down and power cables are buried in highly populated areas of the country." However, National Grid,
which manages the network, said putting high voltage cables underground posed different risks and was prohibitively expensive.
It said: "Underground cabling for high-voltage lines can cost between six and 17 times as much as using overhead lines.Underground
cables can also pose more of a risk because of the danger of them being hit by excavation, and they are more difficult to
maintain."
The UK has at least 14,000 miles of high-voltage cable carrying electricity from power stations to homes and businesses.
The Swiss team, led by Professor Matthias Egger, found the risk of developing Alzheimer's increases the longer people live
next to electricity pylons. He said yesterday: "Anyone who lives within the immediate vicinity of high-voltage power
lines for more than 10 years has a significantly higher risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer's."
The paper has been published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Professor Henshaw claims that radiation caused by
power lines and other high-power electrical sources stops the body creating the natural hormone melatonin in the pineal gland,
which is lacking in Alzheimer's sufferers. He said: "This paper is like the final piece of a jigsaw. The link between
childhood leukaemia and power lines is already accepted by everybody. And there is strong evidence of a link to other diseases
as well." Professor Egger warns that sleeping next to a radio-operated alarm clock or living beside an electrified railway
line present a similar dementia risk, due to proximity of the radiation source and the strength of the electric charge. He
said: "Anything that is plugged in and that is on all the time and that is near to your body is a source of this type of
radiation." National Grid said last night: "We recognise that there is some scientific evidence suggesting certain
specific health effects may be linked to electric and magnetic fields. This can cause public concern." "However, the balance
of evidence remains against electric and magnetic fields causing ill health."
Last night the Department of Health said it was reviewing its position in the light of the study. The DoH says
on its website: “In this country the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) advises on risks from radiations
including electromagnetic fields.” But they know full well the NRPB (which is actually now called the Health Protection
Agency or HPA and has been for years) shrugs and says no risks are proven.
Well there never will be, because nobody is properly looking, and others mercilessly, and I use the word advisedly,
deny it, usually for commercial and PR reasons.

persons. There must be an end to the pervasive nonchalance, indifference and lack of heartfelt respect for the plight of these
persons. It is clear something serious has happened and is happening. Every aspect of electrohypersensitive peoples’
lives, including the ability to work productively in society, have healthy relations and find safe, permanent housing, is
at stake. The basics of life are becoming increasingly inaccessible to a growing percentage of the world’s population.
I strongly advise all governments to take the issue of electromagnetic health hazards seriously and to take action while there
is still time. There is too great a risk that the ever increasing RF-based communications technologies represent a real danger
to humans, especially because of their exponential, ongoing and unchecked growth. Governments should act decisively to protect
public health by changing the exposure standards to be biologically-based, communicating the results of the independent science
on this topic and aggressively researching links with a multitude of associated medical conditions.”

Electromagnetic fields are packets of energy that does not have any mass, and visible light is what we know best. X-rays
are also electromagnetic fields, but they are more energetic than visible light. Our concern is for those electromagnetic
fields that are less energetic than visible light, including those that are associated with electricity and those used for
communications and in microwave ovens. The fields associated with electricity are commonly called “extremely low
frequency” fields (ELF), while those used in communication and microwave ovens are called “radiofrequency”
(RF) fields. Studies of people have shown that both ELF and RF exposures result in an increased risk of cancer, and
that this occurs at intensities that are too low to cause tissue heating. Unfortunately, all of our exposure standards
are based on the false assumption that there are no hazardous effects at intensities that do not cause tissue heating. Based
on the existing science, many public health experts believe it is possible we will face an epidemic of cancers in the future
resulting from uncontrolled use of cell phones and increased population exposure to WiFi and other wireless devices.
Thus it is important that all of us, and especially children, restrict our use of cell phones, limit exposure to background
levels of Wi-Fi, and that government and industry discover ways in which to allow use of wireless devices without such
elevated risk of serious disease. We need to educate decision-makers that ‘business as usual’ is unacceptable.
The importance of this public health issue can not be underestimated.”

“Radio frequency radiation and other forms of electromagnetic pollution are harmful at orders of magnitude well below
existing guidelines. Science is one of the tools society uses to decide health policy. In the case of telecommunications equipment,
such as cell phones, wireless networks, cell phone antennas, PDAs, and portable phones, the science is being ignored.
Current guidelines urgently need to be re-examined by government and reduced to reflect the state of the science.
There is an emerging public health crisis at hand and time is of the essence.”

Convenience? Or Environmental Hazard?
Ambient man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs), across a range of frequencies, are a serious environmental issue. Yet most
environmentalists know little about it, perhaps because the subject has been the purview of physicists and engineers for so
long that biologists have lost touch with electromagnetism’s fundamental inclusion in the biological paradigm. All living
cells and indeed whole living beings, no matter what genus or species, are dynamic coherent electrical systems utterly reliant
on bioelectricity for life’s most basic metabolic processes. It turns out that most living things are fantastically
sensitive to vanishingly small EMF exposures. Living cells interpret such exposures as part of our normal cellular activities
(think heartbeats, brainwaves, cell division itself, etc.) The problem is, man-made electromagnetic exposures aren’t
“normal.” They are artificial artifacts, with unusual intensities, signaling characteristics, pulsing patterns,
and wave forms, that don’t exist in nature. And they can misdirect cells in myriad ways. Every aspect of the ecosystem
may be affected, including all living species from animals, humans, plants and even microorganisms in water and soil. We are
already seeing problems in sentinel species like birds, bats, and bees. Wildlife is known to abandon areas when cell towers
are placed. Radiofrequency radiation (RF)—the part of the electromagnetic spectrum used in all-things-wireless today—is
a known immune system suppressor, among other things. RF is a form of energetic air pollution and we need to understand it
as such. Humans are not the only species being affected. The health of our planet may be in jeopardy from this newest environmental
concern—added to all the others. Citizens need to call upon government to fund appropriate research and to get industry
influence out of the dialogue. We ignore this at our own peril now.”

“The key point about electromagnetic pollution that the public has to realize is that it is not necessary that the
intensity be large for a biological interaction to occur. There is now considerable evidence that extremely weak signals can
have physiological consequences. These interactive intensities are about 1000 times smaller than the threshold values formerly
estimated by otherwise knowledgeable theoreticians, who, in their vainglorious approach to science, rejected all evidence
to the contrary as inconsistent with their magnificent calculations. These faulty estimated thresholds are yet to be corrected
by both regulators and the media.
The overall problem with environmental electromagnetism is much deeper, not only of concern at power line frequencies,
but also in the radiofrequency range encompassing mobile phones. Here the public’s continuing exposure to electromagnetic
radiation is largely connected to money. Indeed the tens of billions of dollars in sales one finds in the cell phone industry
makes it mandatory to corporate leaders that they deny, in knee-jerk fashion, any indication of hazard.
There may be hope for the future in knowing that weakly intense electromagnetic interactions can be used for good as well
as harm. The fact that such fields are biologically effective also implies the likelihood of medical applications, something
that is now taking place. As this happens, I think it will make us more aware about how our bodies react to electromagnetism,
and it should become even clearer to everyone concerned that there is reason to be very, very careful about ambient electromagnetic
fields.”

who have used these devices for 10 years or longer, and when they are used mainly on one side of the head. Recent studies
that do not report increased risk of brain tumors and acoustic neuromas have not looked at heavy users, use over ten years
or longer, and do not look at the part of the brain which would reasonably have exposure to produce a tumor.”

century, like common acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children, female breast cancer, malignant melanoma and asthma, can

to minimize community and personal EMF exposures.”

“Radiofrequency radiation human exposure standards for personal wireless communications devices and for
environmental exposure to wireless transmitters are set by national governments to guide the use of wireless
communications devices and for wireless transmitters. In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal
Communications Commission set these standards. The Council on Wireless Technology Impacts considers these exposure standards to
be inadequate as they are based on heating effects and do not accommodate the low level, cumulative exposure conditions
in which the public now lives. These standards are also designed for acute, short term exposure conditions
and do not acknowledge the medical evidence pointing to increased risks and actual harm that results from chronic,
intermittent exposure. Federal and State public heath agencies are not officially addressing what many concerned
scientists and medical doctors now see as an emerging public health problem. There are no health surveillance or
remedial response systems in place to advise citizens about electromagnetic radiation exposure (EMR).
As wireless technology evolves, ambient background levels increase, creating electrical pollution conditions
which are becoming ubiquitous and more invasive. We strongly encourage consumers, manufacturers, utility providers
and policymakers to reduce, eliminate and mitigate EMR exposure conditions and to support biologically based standards.”

“According to the BioInitiative Report: A Rationale for a Biologically-Based Public Exposure Standard for Electromagnetic
Fields—from electrical and electronic appliances, power lines and wireless devices such as cell phones, cordless
phones, cellular antennas, towers, and broadcast transmission towers—we live in an invisible fog of EMF which thirty
years of science, including over 2,000 peer reviewed studies, shows exposes us to serious health risks such as increased Alzheimer’s
disease, breast cancer, Lou Gehrig disease, EMF immune system hypersensitivity and disruption of brain function and DNA.
The public needs to wake up politicians and public officials to the need for updating the decades old EMF public health standards. This
report tells how.”

“The U.S. spends over $2 trillion dollars on health care each year, of which about 78% is from people with chronic
illnesses, without adequately exploring and understanding what factors—including EMF/RF—contribute to imbalances
in peoples’ bodies’ in the first place. After reading The BioInitiative Report, it should come as no surprise
to policymakers, given the continually increasing levels of EMF/RF exposures in our environment, that close to 50% of Americans
now live with a chronic illness. I grieve for people who needlessly suffer these illnesses and hold out the hope that our
government leaders will become more cognizant of the role electromagnetic factors are playing in disease, health care costs
and the erosion of quality of life and productivity in America.”

“There is every indication that cell phones cause brain tumors, salivary gland tumors and eye cancer. Yet,
because the cell phone industry provides a substantial proportion of research funding, this reality is hidden from the general
public. The Interphone Study, a 13-country research project, substantially funded by the cell phone industry has consistently
shown that use of a cell phone protects the user from risk of a brain tumor! Does anything more need to be said?
It is time that fully independent studies be funded by those governmental agencies whose charter is to protect its citizens
so that the truth about the very damaging health hazards of microwave radiation becomes clear and well known.”

“The radiofrequency radiation safety policy in force in the United States fails to protect the public. Currently
in the US there are more than 260 million wireless subscribers, the demand that drives the continuing build-out of antenna
sites in residential and commercial neighborhoods, including near schools, daycare centers, and senior living centers and
in the workplace. The January 2008 report issued by the National Academy of Sciences committee whose task was to examine
the needs and gaps in the research on the biological effects of exposure to these antennas points out that the research studies
to date do not adequately represent exposure realities. Specifically, the studies 1) assume a single antenna rather than the
typical arrangements of a minimum of four to six antennas per site, thereby underestimating exposure intensities, 2) do not
pertain to the commonly used multiple-element base station antennas, thereby not taking into account exposures to multiple
frequencies, 3) lack models of several heights for men, women, and children of various ages for use in the characterization
of Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) distributions for exposures from cell phones, wireless PCs, and base stations and 4) do
not take into consideration absorption effects of exposures from the many different radio frequency emitting devices to which
the public is often simultaneously exposed. A federal research strategy to address these very serious inadequacies in the
science on which our government is basing health policy is sorely needed now.”

The Venice Resolution, initiated by the International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety (ICEMS) on June 6, 2008,
and now signed by nearly 50 peer reviewed scientists worldwide, states in part, “We are compelled to confirm the existence
of non-thermal effects of electromagnetic fields on living matter, which seem to occur at every level of investigation from
molecular to epidemiological. Recent epidemiological evidence is stronger than before. We recognize the growing public health
problem known as electrohypersensitivity. We strongly advise limited use of cell phones, and other similar devices, by young
children and teenagers, and we call upon governments to apply the Precautionary Principle as an interim measure while more
biologically relevant exposure standards are developed.”

“There are many examples of the failure to use the precautionary principle in the past, which have resulted in serious
and often irreversible damage to health and environments. Appropriate, precautionary and proportionate actions taken now to
avoid plausible and potentially serious threats to health from EMF are likely to be seen as prudent and wise from future perspectives.”

Claims that cell phones pose no health hazards are supported solely by Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) limits safety standards
written by the telecommunications industry decades ago based on studies they funded. These have made the erroneous assumption
that the only harm that could come from cell phone radiofrequency emissions would be from a thermal or heating action, since
such non thermal fields can have no biological effects. The late Dr. Ross Adey disproved this three decades ago by demonstrating
that very similar radiofrequency fields with certain carrier and modulation frequencies that had insufficient energy to produce
any heating could cause the release of calcium ions from cells. Since then, numerous research reports have confirmed that
non thermal fields from cell phones, tower transmitters, power lines, and other man made sources can significantly affect
various tissues and physiologic functions.
We are constantly being bathed in an increasing sea of radiation from exposure to the above, as well as electrical appliances,
computers, Bluetooth devices, Wi-Fi installations and over 2,000 communications satellites in outer space that shower us with
signals to GPS receivers. New WiMax transmitters on cell phone towers that have a range of up to two square miles compared
to Wi-Fi’s 300 feet will soon turn the core of North America into one huge electromagnetic hot spot. Children are more
severely affected because their brains are developing and their skulls are thinner. A two-minute call can alter brain function
in a child for an hour, which is why other countries ban their sale or discourage their use under the age of 18. In contrast,
this is the segment of the population now being targeted here in a $2 billion U.S. advertising campaign that views “tweens”
(children between 8 and 12 years old) as the next big cell phone market. Firefly and Barbie cell phones are also being promoted
for 6 to 8-year-olds.
It is not generally appreciated that there is a cumulative effect and that talking on a cell phone for just an hour a day
for ten years can add up to 10,000 watts of radiation. That’s ten times more than from putting your head in a microwave
oven. Pregnant women may also be at increased risk based on a study showing that children born to mothers who used a cell
phone just two or three times a day during pregnancy showed a dramatic increase in hyperactivity and other behavioral and
emotional problems. And for the 30% of children who had also used a cell phone by age 7, the incidence of behavioral problems
was 80% higher! Whether ontogeny (embryonic development) recapitulates phylogeny is debatable, but it is clear that lower
forms of life are also much more sensitive. If you put the positive electrode of a 1.5 volt battery in the Pacific Ocean at
San Francisco and the negative one off San Diego, sharks in the in between these cities can detect the few billionths of a
volt electrical field. EMF fields have also been implicated in the recent massive but mysterious disappearance of honeybee
colonies essential for pollinating over 90 commercial crops. As Albert Einstein warned, “If the bee disappeared off
the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left.”
Finally, all life on earth evolved under the influence of solar radiation and geomagnetic forces that we have learned to
adapt to and in some instances even utilize. The health of all living systems (ranging upward from a cell, tissue, organ or
person, to a family, organization or nation) depends on good communication – good communication within, as well as with
the external environment. All communication in the body eventually takes place via very subtle electromagnetic signaling between
cells that is now being disrupted by artificial electropollution we have not had time to adapt to. As Alvin Toffler emphasized
in Future Shock, too much change in too short a time produces severe stress due to adaptational failure. The adverse effects
of electrosmog may take decades to be appreciated, although some, like carcinogenicity, are already starting to surface. This
gigantic experiment on our children and grandchildren could result in massive damage to mind and body with the potential to
produce a disaster of unprecedented proportions, unless proper precautions are immediately implemented. At the same time,
we must acknowledge that novel electromagnetic therapies have been shown to benefit stress related disorders ranging from
anxiety, depression and insomnia, to arthritis, migraine and tension headaches. As demonstrated in Bioelectromagnetic Medicine,
they may also be much safer and more effective than drugs, so we need to avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”
Environment, Agriculture, Local and Regional Affairs‘Our
health is endangered by insidious pollution’ says Jean Huss "More and more scientific studies are proving
links between certain pollutants and certain illnesses, such as allergies, respiratory problems, fertility problems or central
nervous system disorders", said Jean Huss (Luxembourg, SOC), rapporteur of the Committee on the Environment, at the opening
of a conference on the effects of a polluted environment on health, including pollution in our own homes. There is an omnipresent
cocktail of chemical, physical or biological agents which are all around us – electromagnetic fields, construction materials
or toxic moulds – and now engendering new syndromes, Mr Huss said. He called for urgent action to make people realise
the scale of the phenomenon. His forthcoming report on the subject will highlight progress achieved in environmental protection
and exemplary action by certain NGOs to alert public opinion and political decision-makers. He also aims to develop a few
key points for a global strategy to prevent environment-related health risks. A further concern of the rapporteur is that,
in terms of treatment, environment-related illnesses are often marginalised by healthcare systems, which regard them as psychiatric
disorders. "Environmental medicine must be recognised as a discipline in its own right," he said. The draft report
is due to be debated by the Assembly during its April 2009 plenary session. Indoor pollution and its links to illness to be considered at a conference in Strasbourg
